DA Score Explained: A Practical Guide for Growing Websites

StreamlineBy StreamlineOctober 10, 2026No Comments5 Mins Read

A website can publish useful articles, attract readers and still struggle to earn attention from search engines. When businesses assess their online presence or consider a collaboration with another site, they often encounter the DA score. It can be a helpful comparison tool, but it is easy to misread if treated as a direct measure of search rankings or business quality.

What does a DA score measure?

Domain Authority, commonly shortened to DA, is a metric developed by Moz to estimate how likely a website may be to rank in search results compared with other sites. The score runs from 1 to 100. It is calculated using signals related to a site’s backlink profile, including the number and quality of links pointing to it.

DA is not a Google ranking score, and Google does not use Moz’s number to decide where a page appears. It is best understood as a third-party estimate that can help marketers compare websites within a similar field. A site with a higher score is not automatically more useful, trustworthy or relevant to every campaign.

For a closer look at what the metric represents, why it can change and how it differs from alternatives, read this guide to the DA score. Understanding its limits is as important as knowing how to read the number.

Why the number can change

A DA score may rise or fall even when a website owner has not made a major change. Moz updates its index and calculations, while the wider web is constantly gaining and losing links. A site may gain links from reputable publications, lose links when old pages disappear, or see its relative position shift as competing domains build stronger backlink profiles.

Because the scale is logarithmic, moving from 10 to 20 is generally not equivalent in effort to moving from 70 to 80. Higher scores are harder to achieve, and small changes should not be mistaken for a sudden improvement or crisis. Compare figures over time, and use the same tool and similar conditions when tracking progress.

DA, DR and Authority Score are not interchangeable

Several SEO platforms provide authority-style metrics, but each uses its own database and formula. Ahrefs Domain Rating, or DR, focuses on the strength of a website’s backlink profile. Semrush Authority Score combines link-related data with other signals, including estimated organic traffic and spam indicators. Moz DA uses its own link index and predictive model.

As a result, a domain can have noticeably different scores across these services. There is no universal conversion chart that makes the numbers equivalent. Choose a metric that fits the tool you use, then compare like with like. When evaluating a potential partner site, a difference between platforms is a prompt to investigate rather than a reason to reject the site outright.

How to use DA when evaluating a website

Marketers often look at DA when assessing guest-post opportunities, potential collaborators or websites that might link to their content. The score can help narrow a long list, but it should sit beside more direct checks. A domain with a modest DA may reach a valuable niche audience, while a high-scoring site may have little relevance to your customers.

  • Check topical fit: Review whether the site regularly publishes material related to your industry and whether its readers are likely to care about your subject.

  • Look at real traffic: Consider estimated organic visits and whether the site has pages that attract consistent, relevant readers. Traffic estimates are imperfect, so treat them as clues rather than audited figures.

  • Inspect backlink quality: Look for links from credible, relevant websites. A large link count alone can hide low-quality or unrelated sources.

  • Read recent content: Check whether articles are original, current and useful. A healthy publication has a clear purpose, not just pages created to host links.

  • Assess the audience and placement: Consider whether a link or collaboration would help a reader discover something genuinely useful, rather than merely adding a number to a report.

These checks help prevent a common mistake: choosing a site solely because its authority metric looks impressive. A relevant mention from a trusted publication can be more valuable to a business than a link from a larger but unrelated domain.

Build authority through useful work

There is no reliable shortcut to a stronger backlink profile. Businesses can improve their prospects by publishing original research, clear guides, case studies and resources that other writers have a reason to cite. Outreach works best when it is specific: explain why a piece fits the recipient’s audience and offer information that adds value to their coverage.

Small teams may bring in freelancers for research, editing, design, video or technical support. When searching for suitable talent, details such as a freelancer’s location can help buyers find people who understand a local market or work in a compatible time zone. On Osdire, freelancers can add their city and country as part of freelancer profile optimization, making them easier to discover in location-based searches.

Whatever the team size, measure the work by the quality of the content and the usefulness it provides, not by a promised score increase. Strong pages can earn relevant attention over time, but no single metric can guarantee search performance.

Use DA as context, not a verdict

DA score is most useful as one comparative signal among several. It can help organize research and track broad changes, but it cannot confirm that a website has a genuine audience, that a backlink is valuable or that a page will rank. Combine it with relevance, traffic, editorial quality and backlink review. That wider view supports better decisions for link building and more sustainable digital growth.
